For students, teachers and researchers

Plan the dissertation, the group project or the grant.

NeoGantt is a free, browser-based Gantt chart for students planning a dissertation, a group project or a research proposal. One person gets up to five charts at no cost, with a research project template to start from and a one-page PDF to hand your supervisor.

Research project template

From proposal to submission in about 19 weeks.

Literature review, ethics approval, data collection, analysis, drafting and supervisor feedback, ending on a submission milestone. Change the dates to suit your deadline; the shape holds for most dissertations and theses.

Students

A dissertation plan in an evening, working backwards.

  1. Put the submission date in first, as a milestone. Everything else is arranged in front of it.
  2. Add the dates you don’t control: supervisor meetings, ethics committee deadlines, the proposal hand-in. Milestones again.
  3. Block out the time you won’t work. Add exam weeks, term breaks or a family holiday as non-working periods. Task durations skip them, so a three-week write-up doesn’t pretend you’ll write through Christmas.
  4. Draw the work in phases: reading, research, analysis, writing. Click and drag on the timeline to draw each task.
  5. Leave room for feedback. Supervisors take longer than you think. Give revisions their own bar.
  6. Export a PDF for your proposal appendix. A4 portrait fits the whole chart on one page, and it stays sharp when your supervisor zooms in.

If you’re short on time, open the research project template instead of a blank chart and re-date it: the phases and the supervisor-feedback gaps are already there. If you’ve never built a Gantt chart, the guide on how to make a Gantt chart covers the basics in a few minutes.

Group projects, teaching and research

Other ways it gets used on campus.

Group projects

One editor, everyone informed

One person builds the chart on the free plan and posts the view-only link in the group chat, so everyone works to the same hand-in date. If several of you need to edit, a team plan covers up to five people for $15 a month.

Teachers

A timeline the class can open

Set out the milestones of a term-long project and post the share link in your learning platform. Students open it in a browser without signing up, and can print their own copy.

Researchers

The Gantt chart the grant asks for

Funding applications often want a project timeline. Build work packages as groups and deliverables as milestones, then export a vector PDF that stays sharp in the application document.

Questions from students and teachers

Is there a student or education discount?

There's no separate education pricing, because most students never need to pay. The Free plan gives one person up to five charts, with PDF export and share links included.

Do I need to install anything?

No. NeoGantt runs in the browser. You can start in the demo before you sign up and save the chart to your new account afterwards.

Can I use it on a phone or tablet?

Share links open on any device, so a supervisor can check your plan on a phone. Building a chart is best done on a laptop or desktop; there's no mobile app.

My course says to make the Gantt chart in Excel. Can I still use this?

Check with your tutor. If what they need is the chart itself, a PDF from NeoGantt usually does the job. If they want the spreadsheet, NeoGantt can't produce one: it exports PDF only.
